About Sala Bai

 

Training underprivileged young Cambodians

 

 

 Sala Baï is a Hotel and Restaurant School created by the French NGO “Agir Pour Le Cambodge” in October 2002. Each year the school trains – free of charge – about 100 young disadvantaged Cambodians, with priority to girls (70%).

 

The training lasts 11 months and offers four different training categories: Restaurant service (32 students), Cooking (32 students), Front Office (12 students) and Housekeeping (24 students). The program includes theory classes (technical training, English, general education & life skills) and practical experience at our training facilities and during internships at our partner hotels.

The training is totally free of charge for the students. The Sala Baï scholarship provides school supplies, accommodation, food, bicycle, uniforms, and medical coverage for all students.

Sala Baí students are recruited based on the following criteria:

 

  1. must come from disadvantaged families (low income, less than 300$ per year)
  2. be between 17 and 23 years old
  3. have a minimum educational level of grade 6 (grade 10 for Front Office students)
  4. and be highly motivated

The students' recruitment, which is done by our social workers, is a 4 step process: application & registration, family visits to assess the suitability of candidates, a written exam, and interviews with technical trainers to assess motivation.

Sala Baï social workers will also assist graduates to find employment:

100% of the graduates are employed within three months after graduation.

After six years of operation, 505 Sala Baï students have been trained for careers in the growing hospitality industry, enabling them to achieve economic independence and improve the living conditions of their families.

How to help?

salabai3* Come to our training Hotel and Restaurant – run by the students – these are places of essential learning activity and work experience. They are open to the public and allow us to self-fund approximately 16% of the program's annual budget

• 1 lunch at $8 = 1 training day's cost per student

• 1 night at $15 = 2 training days' cost per student  
• 1 recipe book at $33 = 4 training days' cost per student

* Sponsor a student: the annual training cost for one student is $3,000. If you wish, you can contribute monthly towards a student’s school fee.

* Making a donation: to help us purchase new equipment & materials necessary for teaching and improving the quality of our training program.
