About The Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre

BBC

Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre (BBC) is a social enterprise providing alternative, fair, livelihoods to rural communities in Siem Reap province. Located in Sanday Village on the way to Banteay Srey Temple and the Landmine Museum, BBC has established the largest live butterfly exhibit of its kind in South East Asia. This allows families who are sustainably farming butterflies for the enclosure to be supported by revenue generated from tourist admissions. The project has recently expanded into exporting pupae to butterfly exhibits overseas, allowing more families to engage in butterfly farming and diversify their income generating activities.

Project objectives:

BBC

· Poverty alleviation and alternative livelihoods. Currently families from Sanday Village and several remote communities in the Phnom Kulen National Park are involved in butterfly farming. BBC also employs local staff at the exhibit - to mange the centre, train and support butterfly farmers and give personalised tours to visitors.

· Reduced pressure on the local environment. Offering butterfly farming as a well-paid livelihood provides an alternative to unsustainable forms of agriculture.

· Environmental Education. Providing visitors to BBC and the local community with an increased awareness of local Cambodian biodiversity and ecology and engaging them with broader conservation issues.
