About the Lake Clinic

The Lake Clinic’s mission is to look after the health of the communities of floating villages who live amongst the stretches of water hyacinths and half submerged trees in the more remote parts of the lake. This is the Ton Le Sap Lake in the rainy season, rich in extraordinary birdlife and freshwater fish, where sixty floating villages of varying sizes exist. The vast majority of these are impoverished groups of people whose income is often no more than $ - 40c a day. Their diet is protein rich – exclusively fish and rice – but lacking in vegetables and fruit. These are expensive and sometimes difficult to obtain and many villagers have been unaware of their health benefits. Indeed, these groups of people have only had variable or non-existent access to basic medical health care as they live far from dry land in the rainy season and have not been associated with any government health centres.

In the latter part of 2008, after month of careful planning and organization and with the continual commitment, confidence and generosity from our donors , the TLC-1, a motorized boat similar to a medium sized cabin cruiser, commenced its maiden voyage. We had found and recruited a well qualified and experienced health care team who could now set out to bring high quality medical care on a weekly basis to three of the most isolated and impoverished of these villages in the provinces of Siem Reap and Kampong Thom. This is the first time any consistent medical help has been available and already the villagers have gained greatly from the expertise freely given to them. Now adults, pregnant and nursing mothers and their children can all take advantage of the benefits TLC can offer.
